Toilets for transgender people – Why is it even an issue?
Like it or not, the news over the next 9 months or so will be dominated by the election campaigns for the next president of the USA.
The Democrats and Republicans have very different opinions when it comes to LGBT equality.
The Republican candidates (Donald Trump and Ted Cruz) are both outspokenly opposed to the equal marriage act and equality for LGBT people in the USA. But that prejudice goes much further than just marriage – it extends to the bathroom as well.
The Republican National Committee (RNC) announced just last week that they endorsed the Anti-Transgender Bathroom Bill Link
What’s scary about this bill if it does become policy (there are many counter movements to ensure it doesn’t) – is that it will become illegal for a transgender person to use a public bathroom of their gender and instead they will have to use the bathrooms of the gender they were assigned at birth.
There are many campaigners against this legislative campaign one of the better articles I’ve read is linked here campaigners against
The whole idea of toilets being an issue for an election campaign to me seems insane. Despite what the campaigners of the for argument will tell you, trans-people are not out to molest you when they use the toilet!
For most trans-people using the bathroom can be a huge source of anxiety. We like you want to flush and go. We sit in our cubicle, do our business and then leave.
Imagine coming out of the cubicle as a female to be confronted by a trans-male and vice versa. I’m not the only one who can see how absurd this is.
To suggest anything less I think speaks more about the depravity of the minds of those speaking for this campaign, than it does about anything else.
Today more kids than ever are coming out as transgender. It’s not going to go away. If you want to see real progress for society as a whole, you have to represent all parts of society.
The RNC as a mainstream political party are actually doing more harm to theirs and their countries future than they are good. In placing an embargo on a whole section of society to use bathrooms of their gender identity, based on nothing more than ill-informed prejudice and ignorance. They are asking for trouble. How soon would it be before someone is attacked for using a bathroom and appearing different or even worse killed?
29 transgender women were murdered in the USA in 2015 – for being transgender. This is actually the tip of the iceberg as it’s only a record of those who have been killed at the hands of others.
How about the youths like Lelah Alcorn who will become so disassociated with society and how it treats them that they too will take their own life.
The USA cannot afford to push ahead with this legislation if it hopes to live up to the words of the famous statue on Liberty Island that reads “Give me your tired, your poor, Your huddled masses yearning to breathe free, The wretched refuse of your teeming shore. Send these, the homeless, tempest-tossed to me, I lift my lamp beside the golden door”
